Shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, troopers were called to investigate reports of debris on the interstate south of Route 289 in Fairfax County.
Now, police are attempting to identify the driver and vehicle involved.
According to investigators, it is believed the truck was heading north on I-95 in the left lane with its dump bed fully raised when it struck the overhead signage.
The crash caused "significant damage to the overhead sign and a large amount of debris to fall into the three right travel lanes," a spokesperson for the agency said.
Late in the afternoon of July 11, state police were still working with the Virginia Department of Transportation to have crews safely make repairs to the sign and its support structure, which was also damaged.
The incident made for a chaotic afternoon rush for motorists, as several lanes were closed. Traffic was backed up approximately nine miles as of 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
